I have a lot of time for the idea of calling people Co-Founder or Everything Technical or something like that. I do think that people without enough experience “take” the Chief-* title far too easily. However, if you are a founder and you are running it, then CEO is easier for everyone else to understand. Strangely, as a CTO who is more of a CTO than a hacker, and working in a startup, I’d be very very annoyed if someone took my CTO title away from me, but then that’s because of my experience.
